We have volunteer opportunities in many areas:
We also accommodate small groups to clean-up, paint, etc. Depending on the specific volunteer job, training is available.
Clients who use our food cupboard have scheduled appointments. Volunteers welcome them in, do a short interview, checks their ID's and give them their food. Bags of food are made up in advance, and given according to family size.
Serve a meal, wash dishes, keep the table in the dining room wiped down and supplied with clean cups, snacks, cream, sugar, napkins, etc. Volunteers have the opportunity to play cards, etc. and chat with the guests. The purpose of our drop-in program is to offer a meal, but equally important to offer a safe and welcoming atmosphere to people on the street, homeless or not.
Greeter:
Welcome guests in and show them to their assigned beds. If there are no more room, help the men find alternative shelters. Prepare snacks, decaf coffee, hot water for soup, tea, etc. Check the log to familiarize yourself with the guests who are signed up and see if the staff has left any notes. Ministers of Hospitality:
At night, check in new shelter guests for the next night and provide linens for each new guest. In the morning, wake guests at 6:00am and prepare breakfast in the kitchen. We are in need of individuals to adopt families for the holidays and also to deliver the baskets which come to Dimitri House. The dates for delivery are typically the Friday or Monday before the holiday.
Volunteer needs for fundraising could work on the 'Planning Committee', set up for a particular event, tear down after an event, work the event, distribute advertising materials, pick up props, printing or mailings, etc.
Volunteer responsibilites would include answering phones, filing, typing, making phones calls, setting up appointments for clothing and other referrals, etc. Offices are on the second floor, therefore, volunteers need to be able to climb stairs.
Board members must be able to attend once-monthly meetings, work on a team to plan fundraising events, attend fundraisers, commit to one year of service, work in cooperation with other members to make decisions concerning Dimitri House and Dimitri House staff.
This person would need a truck and be available on an on-call basis.
This position could be for a group of individuals interested in cleaning, painting or outside clean-up.
